Guide: Step-by-step tutorial on how to free up space on your Android phone
Your Android phone can run out of storage space even if you haven't installed very many apps. Photos, videos, downloaded files, app data and local backups can take up a significant part of the device's memory over time.
Before deleting files at random, it is better to identify exactly what is taking up space and remove only the data you no longer need. In this tutorial you will see step by step how you can free up space on an Android phone without accidentally deleting important files.
Step 1: Check how much space you have available
First, check the current storage situation.
- Open the app Settings.
- Look for the section Storage or Storage space.
- Check the total space, used space and available space.
- Analyse the categories that take up the most space.
The name and position of the menu may vary depending on the manufacturer, model and Android version.
Do not start deleting files before seeing which category actually takes up the most memory.
Step 2: Identify what takes up the most space
Depending on your phone, you will be able to see categories such as:
- photos and videos;
- apps;
- downloaded files;
- documents;
- audio;
- other files;
- temporary data.
If photos and videos take up most of the space, start with those. If apps take up most of the memory, check the apps you no longer use.
Step 3: Check the Downloads folder
The Downloads folder can accumulate documents, images, videos, archives and other files over time that you downloaded just once.
- Open the app Files or your phone's file manager.
- Go to the folder Downloads.
- Check existing files.
- Delete only the files you are sure you no longer need.
Do not automatically delete all files in this folder. Some may contain important documents or materials you want to keep.
Step 4: Check large videos
Videos are among the files that can take up the most space.
Open the gallery or file manager and look for videos you no longer use.
Before deleting them, check if there is a copy in the cloud, on a computer or on another device.
If you want to keep the videos, an alternative is to transfer them to a computer or cloud storage service and then remove the local copy, after checking that the transfer was completed correctly.
Step 5: Check duplicate or unnecessary photos
Burst photos, screenshots, images received via messaging apps and failed photos can accumulate quickly.
Check in particular:
- screenshots;
- duplicate photos;
- blurry images;
- photos sent or received multiple times;
- images you no longer need to keep locally.
Delete only after checking that important images are kept in another location, if you intend to remove them from your phone.
Step 6: Check files received via messaging apps
Messaging apps can locally save photos, videos, documents, and other files.
If you use apps like WhatsApp, check the space taken up by media files and chats containing a lot of material.
Before deleting, check whether those files are important and if they can still be accessed later from the chat or from a backup.
Do not manually delete app folders or databases unless you know exactly what they contain.
Step 7: Check apps you no longer use
Installed apps take up space, and some can also accumulate additional data.
- Open Settings.
- Go to the Apps section Applications.
- Review the list of installed apps.
- Identify apps you no longer use.
- Uninstall unnecessary apps.
Avoid uninstalling system apps unless you know exactly what role they have.
Step 8: Clear app cache when necessary
Some apps keep temporary data in the cache. In certain situations, this area can end up taking up significant space.
On many phones you can check this area from:
Settings → Apps → select the app → Storage
If the option Clear cacheappears, it can remove temporary data.
Make sure you do not confuse Clear cache with Be careful not to confuse it with Clear data.Clearing app data can remove local settings, accounts, or other information stored by the app.
Step 9: Check the Recycle Bin folder
Some gallery apps or file managers move deleted files to a Recycle Bin before permanent removal.
If you have already deleted many photos or videos, check this folder.
- Open the Gallery or Files app.
- Look for the section Bin, Recycle Bin or a similar name.
- Check the files.
- If you are sure you no longer need them, permanently remove them.
The availability and retention period of deleted files differ depending on the app and manufacturer.
Step 10: Move important files to another location
If you do not want to lose photos and videos, but you need local space, you can move important files to:
- a computer;
- an SSD or other storage device;
- a cloud service;
- another compatible device.
After the transfer, check whether the files can be opened again before you delete the original copies from your phone.
Step 11: Do not delete files just because they have unknown names
Some Android folders and files are used by the system or by installed apps.
Do not manually delete files from system directories just to gain a few extra GB.
If you do not know what a file is, first search for information about the app that created it or use the storage tools provided by the system.
Step 12: Check available space again
After cleaning:
- Return to Settings → Storage.
- Check available space.
- Compare the situation with the one at the beginning.
- Identify if there is still a category taking up an unusually large amount of space.
If the available space is still very small, repeat the analysis based on the category taking up the most space.
What NOT to delete without checking
| Element | What you need to do |
|---|---|
| Photos | Check if a backup exists before deleting. |
| Videos | Check the size and importance of the files. |
| Documents | Do not delete them if they are needed for work, school, or other activities. |
| App data | Do not use "Clear data" without understanding the consequences. |
| System files | Do not remove them manually if you do not know their exact role. |
Which method is suitable for freeing up space?
| Method | Advantage | Caution |
|---|---|---|
| Deleting unnecessary files | Frees up local space immediately. | Deleted files may be permanently lost. |
| Transfer to PC | Suitable for large quantities of photos and videos. | You need available space on your PC or storage device. |
| Cloud storage | Allows keeping files without permanently taking up phone memory. | Requires an account, available space, and an internet connection for synchronization. |
| Uninstalling apps | Frees up space used by unused apps. | You may lose local data associated with the app. |
