Guide: Tutorial on how to connect your Android phone to a PC and transfer files
If you want to transfer photos, videos, documents or other files from your Android phone to a PC, the simplest method is connecting via USB cable. In this tutorial you will see, step by step, how to connect your Android phone to Windows, how to enable file transfer and how to copy data between the two devices.
The tutorial is suitable for Samsung, Xiaomi, Redmi, Motorola, Google Pixel, OnePlus and other Android devices, as well as Windows PCs and laptops.
What you need before you start
- A powered-on and unlocked Android phone.
- A Windows PC or laptop.
- A USB cable compatible with your phone.
- Enough free space on your PC for the files you want to transfer.
For large transfers of photos, videos or documents, the USB connection is usually more practical than transferring over the internet.
Step 1 – Connect your Android phone to the PC
Connect your Android phone to the PC using the USB cable. Insert one end of the cable into the phone and the other end into a USB port on the computer.
After connection, the phone may automatically start charging. This is normal, but charging does not automatically mean the phone is available for file transfer.
Step 2 – Unlock your phone
Unlock your phone using the PIN, password, pattern or configured biometric method.
Some Android phones do not allow access to files when the device is locked.
Step 3 – Open the USB notification
After connecting the cable, swipe down the notification bar on your phone.
Look for the notification regarding the USB connection. Depending on the manufacturer and Android version, it may have names such as:
- USB for charging
- Charging this device via USB
- USB preferences
- Android System – USB
Step 4 – Select "File Transfer"
Tap the USB notification and look for the option to use the USB connection.
Select:
File Transfer / Android Auto
On certain phones the option may appear under the name:
- File Transfer
- Transfer files
- MTP
After selecting this option, Windows should be able to access the phone's memory.
Step 5 – Open File Explorer in Windows
On your PC, open File Explorer.
You can open it using the shortcut combination:
Windows + E
On the left side or in the "This PC / Acest PC" section, the connected phone should appear.
Step 6 – Open the phone from File Explorer
In File Explorer, open:
This PC → Android phone
Depending on the device, you may see the manufacturer's name, the phone model or a generic name.
Open the device to view the phone's internal storage.
Step 7 – Access the internal storage
Inside the phone you will find, depending on the model, folders such as:
- DCIM
- Pictures
- Movies
- Download
- Documents
- Music
- Android
For photos taken with the phone camera, the main folder is usually:
DCIM → Camera
Step 8 – Transfer photos and videos
To copy photos to your PC, open:
DCIM → Camera
Select the files you want to transfer.
You can use:
- Ctrl + A to select all files;
- Ctrl + C to copy;
- Ctrl + V to paste.
Create or open the folder on your PC where you want to keep the photos and use Ctrl + V.
Step 9 – Transfer documents and other files
If you want to copy documents, PDFs, archives or other files, check folders such as:
- Download – files downloaded from the internet;
- Documents – documents;
- Pictures – images;
- Movies – videos;
- Music – audio files.
Select the desired files and copy them to a folder on your PC.
Step 10 – Check the transferred files
After copying is complete, open the destination folder on your PC and check whether the files have been transferred correctly.
For photos and videos, it is recommended to open some of the files to check whether they can be viewed without issues.
Step 11 – Transfer files from your PC to your phone
The transfer can also work in reverse.
To copy a file from your PC to your phone:
- Select the file on your PC.
- Press Ctrl + C.
- Open the phone's storage in File Explorer.
- Go into the folder where you want to keep the file.
- Press Ctrl + V.
- Wait for the copy to finish.
Step 12 – Disconnect your phone
After the transfer is finished, check whether all files have been copied.
Close the windows accessing the phone's storage and then unplug the USB cable.
Do not unplug the cable while a file is being copied, as the transfer may be interrupted and the file may become incomplete.
How to transfer files without a cable
If you do not want to use a USB cable, you can also transfer files wirelessly. Available methods include Quick Share and cloud storage services.
Quick Share
Quick Share allows wireless transfer of files between compatible devices. It is especially useful for photos, videos and small or medium-sized documents.
Cloud services
You can upload files to a cloud service and then access them from your PC. This method is useful when the devices are not directly connected to each other.
The drawback is that the transfer depends on the internet connection and the available space in your cloud account.
Which method is more suitable for the transfer?
| Method | Advantage | Disadvantage |
|---|---|---|
| USB | Fast and simple for large amounts of data | You need a compatible cable |
| Quick Share | Convenient for wireless transfer | Speed and compatibility depend on the devices |
| Cloud | Accessible from multiple devices | Requires internet and available space |
The phone is charging, but does not appear on the PC
If your phone charges when you connect it to the PC, but does not appear in File Explorer, check the following:
- Unlock the phone.
- Open the USB notification.
- Select File Transfer.
- Disconnect and reconnect the USB cable.
- Try another USB port on the PC.
- Try a different USB cable.
- Restart the phone and the PC.
Why is the phone charging, but not allowing transfer?
Not all USB cables are designed for data transfer. Some cables can only be used for charging.
If the phone charges, but Windows does not detect it, one of the first things you need to check is the USB cable.
What do you do if Windows does not recognise the phone?
If the phone does not appear in File Explorer after selecting the "File Transfer" mode, the issue may be related to the cable, the USB port, drivers, phone settings or the Windows system.
Start with simple steps: change the USB port, change the cable, restart the devices and check the USB mode selected on the phone again.
